The PopCult ToyBox: MEGO Meet Preview

It’s just a short PopCult Toybox this week, but an exciting one. We are less than two weeks away from MEGO Meet 2013. This is the annual MEGO collectors blowout convention with loads of custom figures, manufacturers showing off new MEGO style product and lots of dealers selling classic MEGO toys. Collectors from all over the world will be coming to West Virginia to play with toys!

The 2013 Mego Meet will once again be at The Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum in Wheeling, West Virginia. Dates for 2013 are June 7 and 8. The registration fee for MEGO Meet is $20, which includes admission for the MEGO collector and a patient and tolerant spouse. All registration fees go to the Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum to cover the costs incurred for hosting this event.

Custom figures, like this cool version of Ultron, will be auctioned off

This year’s  panels include talks with EMCE Toys’  Dr. Mego (of Robot Chicken fame), and Brian Heiler from Plaid Stallions, who will be unveiling a top secret project. There will also be resin-casting workshops and demonstrations of silk-screening and 3 D printing.

While MEGO Meet is primarily aimed at the collector of the classic 8 inch MEGO action figure from the 1970’s, you’ll also find lots of Micronauts and quite a few 12 inch action figures like GI Joe, Johnny West and Captain Action.

The PopCult crew will be on hand this year, and plans call for a special video report to be filed the Tuesday after the show, right here in The PopCult Toybox.

The first four DC figures from Figures Toy Company

This year the talk of MEGO Meet is sure to be the resurgence of Figures Toy Company, whom I wrote about a few weeks ago here in PopCult. They will be reviving the MEGO style DC action figures line as well as producing new figures based on the Batman TV show, The Dukes of Hazzard, Evil Kneivel, Gilligan’s Island and more.

Your extra credit reading for this week is this in-depth interview with the head honcho of Figures Toy Company, Anthony Belasco, over at the MEGO Museum. If you have any interest in what I’ve written this week in the PopCult Toybox, you need to get your butt over to the MEGO Museum. They are the brains behind MEGO Meet.
