The PopCulteer
October 29, 2010

The ArtMares exhibit opened Wednesday night at Kanawha Players Playhouse, and you have one last chance to see it tonight from 5 to 7 PM, before it goes back into the crypt.

This is all part of the second HallowEast happening, wherein the East End of Charleston comes alive with the smell of death.

30 artists contributed to this show, and I’m going to try to show you at least once piece by each one of them. Hit the “read more” link to see the bounty of phantasmagorical photos.

In order for your PopCulteer to squeeze in some sleep, this photo essay is presented without captions.  For a list of the artists, check out this post from eariler in the week.

We are presenting this photo essay roughly in the order in which the show’s curator, Jenifer Sheets, cleverly arranged it in the KP Playhouse.

Chelsea Cook as "Rose Kendrick"

Above you see episode 113 of Radio Free Charleston, “Jazz From Hell Preview.”  This is our Halloween special, and it’s quite a departure. It’s also quite a bit less than I’d originally planned.

Last July I got the idea to bring back Count Rudolph and Celeste, The Zombie Supermodel for our Halloween show this year. That’s me and my imaginary daughter, Chelsea Cook, if you didn’t watch RFC 54 and 55 back in 2008.  I thought that, instead of showing music videos, we’d actually interrupt a cheesy horror movie this year.

Come to the WVSU Capitol Center Theater for six stories of suspense and the supernatural, inspired by true events. Four young people revisit their mysterious encounters with the unknown in a spooky theatrical setting. I got to see part of this show being rehearsed, and it’s a perfect spooky treat for the Halloween season.  Fans of “Ghost Hunters” and the paranormal will really enjoy “Hector’s Warehouse and Other Ghost Stories.”

Presented by The Contemporary Youth Arts Company and writer/director Dan Kehde.  Starring Meredith Overcash, Craig Auge, Mandy Harper, and Coleman Richardson. Tickets are $5.50 for students and seniors, and $9.50 for adults.

Performances on October 28 at 8:15 (join them after Trick or Treating), 29 and 30 at 8:00, or at 2 PM on Sunday, October 31.

Above you see my two entries in this year’s ArtMares Exhibit, part of HallowEast 2 and opening Wednesday night at Kanawha Players Plyhouse, 309 Beauregard Street, on Charleston’s historic East End.

On the left you see “Making Maria,” which was inspired by Fritz Lang’s silent classic science fiction movie, “Metropolis.”  On the right you see “Burlándose de los Huesos.” Both are digital paintings, printed on stretched canvas. Feel free to come and buy the heck out of them, and the other artist’s work, too. In fact, they may cut you discount if you buy everything!

This year’s ArtMares artist lineup is ghoulishly incredible. A full list of artists appears after the jump! At the reception on Thursday night, music will be provided by RFC 111 guest, Andy Park.

We are kicking off Halloween week with a cute little Jack-O-Lantern digital painting.  It started out as a fetish photo.  See if you can find any traces of the original in there.

PopCult will feature Halloween content every day this week.  Yesterday we brought you classic spooky cartoons.  Today, just after Noon, you’ll see a flashback to last year’s Halloween episode of Radio Free Charleston. Keep checking back, because Halloween is popping out all over here at PopCult.

The PopCulteer
October 22, 2010

It’s ArtWalk time again! You know what that means…I slack off for an entire PopCulteer and just post photos of the highlights of my tour of the downtown art scene.

This stunt comes in very handy this month because, on the way home, I sliced open my finger in the car, and my typing is not up to my usual standards. So don’t expect much in the way of captions.

We are doing something else different this month–I’ve put together an “Instant PopCult Video,” which you should see right below this text. It’s a few minutes of random images and music recorded just last night.

The big highlight of this month’s ArtWalk was the pet-centric “Best In Show” exhibit at The Good News Mountaineer Garage Gallery. That’s one of K.D. Lett’s pieces from the show you see above right. After the video, follow the “read more” link to see the rest of the ArtWalk photo essay. There was all kinds of cool new things on display.
