Microsoft adding ‘E74′ errors to warranty

Move over Red Ring of Death — there’s a new fatal error killing off Xbox 360s.

Microsoft announced this week that it has extended its warranty to cover the new “E74” errors that are bricking some consoles. Microsoft will replace or repair consoles affected by the “E74” error for up to three years after the console’s manufacture date, just like it does with the RROD.

“While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays ‘E74’ on their screen,” Microsoft said in a release. “After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with the three flashing red lights error on the console.”

If you’ve experienced the E74 error, head to xbox.com/support to begin the repair process or to see if you’re console is still under warranty.
