Turnovers and other numbers

January 27, 2014 by Doug Smock

First, the Herd’s weakest rankings in the Conference USA stats, LEAGUE GAMES ONLY:

Scoring defense: 15th of 16 teams, 77.7
Scoring margin: 15th, minus-10.3
FG Pct: 15th, .390
FG Pct Defense: Last, .482
3-pt Pct: 15th, .252
Blocked shots: T-14th, 1.83
Assists: 13th, 10.67
Steals: 15th, 4.17
Turn0vers: 13th, 13.8
Assist-to-turnover ratio: 13th, 0.77
3-pointers made: 13th, 4.83

The Herd’s game-opening rash of turnovers was astounding: 5 in the first 1:58. That’s the worst in this string of 2-13 against Division I foes … Eight times in that stretch the Herd has had 5 turnovers in the first 10 minutes. The worst:
1:58 — at Louisiana Tech
5:18 — West Virginia
6:58 — Akron
7:08 — Presbyterian, believe it or not
7:18 — East Tennessee State

Of course, I didn’t survey turnover rashes at the end of games, but here is your top (or bottom) candidate — 5 turnovers in the last 2:45 of regulation at Morehead State. That was painful to watch.

FIU and FAU coming to town this weekend, folks. If this Herd team is a shell of what we thought it might be, it must sweep and emerge 3-5 at the league’s halfway pole.
