Inside Marshall Sports

I have been told Marshall will be ranked 40th by USA Today (fan decoded the teaser), just after Washington and *Central Florida* and 17 spots ahead of West Virginia. Ahead of the Herd will be Ohio, Tulsa and Virginia Tech.

For the C-USA coaches’ poll — yes, there is one, believe it or not — check this item.

Got my Phil Steele, finally, and he is BULLISH on the Herd, calling it the most improved team in the land. If that pans out, watch out.

His order: (East) 1. Marshall 2. ECU 3. Southern Miss, UAB 5. Middle Tennessee 6. FAU 7. FIU. (West) 2. Rice 3. Tulane 4. Louisiana Tech, North Texas 6. UTEP 7. UTSA

(I’m not even writing down Tulsa as West leader. That’s a gimme. The only thing that can derail the Golden Hurricane is an ECU/Marshall stretch on a short week.)

I’m at odds with Phil on his MT pick. It’s strange — he is high on QB Logan Gilmore, the O-line, sort of high on all 3 defensive levels. … yet he’s calling for this team go sub-.500. Looking through the Blue Raiders’ schedule, I see at least 6 wins right off the bat. You have been warned.

Other predictions concerning Thundering Herd football. Add you .02 as you wish.

One of my best Twitter followers tells me the Sporting News order is 1. ECU, 2. MTSU, 3. Herd.

The Orlando Sentinel isn’t so isn’t so impressed, ranking the Herd No. 84 way back on June 3.,0,

First, Athlon, which Herd fans should like:

Ever heard of this outfit? Sheesh. …

Don’t think I’ve seen Marshall in this list yet. Good news. …

Phil Steele always has interesting stuff, and nails much of it … you know Marshall would *have* to be among the most improved defenses …
