Is Doc worth $120,000 per win?

December 5, 2012 by Doug Smock

USA Today put out a sweet chart of how much schools are paying per victory, and Doc Holliday’s $600,000 pay is divided over five victories. On the full chart, he’s actually toward the bottom, but well above most of the Mid-American Conference schools.

Southern Miss’ Ellis Johnson gets the raspberry here. As he learned the hard way, division by zero is impossible. Still, he’s got some checks to cash for the next few years.

A C-USA list, with the 2013 holdovers and all additions, and it is incomplete …

School Coach Conference School Pay Wins Cost Per Win
Southern Mississippi Ellis Johnson C-USA $790,000 0 N/A
Alabama at Birmingham Garrick McGee C-USA $550,000 3 $183,333
Florida International Mario Cristobal Sun Belt $522,183 3 $174,061
Florida Atlantic Carl Pelini Sun Belt $450,000 3 $150,000
North Texas Dan McCarney Sun Belt $545,000 4 $136,250
Marshall Doc Holliday C-USA $600,000 5 $120,000
Texas-El Paso Mike Price C-USA $359,206 3 $119,735
East Carolina Ruffin McNeill C-USA $950,000 8 $118,750
Louisiana Tech Sonny Dykes WAC $750,000 9 $83,333
Middle Tennessee State Rick Stockstill Sun Belt $601,504 8 $75,188

Here I thought that Marshall had moved from the MAC to Conference USA. Perhaps Mr. Smock needs either a good proof reader or an update on Marshall Athletics.

Ummmm… I use MAC coaches because I found it interesting that most of them were at the bottom of the chart … and that Doc was above almost all of them. Having sat through Marshall’s 8 years in Conference USA, I know which league they play in, thank you.
