Coal Tattoo

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar got hit with a question about mountaintop removal Thursday night from an unexpected direction: Daily Show host Jon Stewart.

You can watch the video here.

And here’s my quick transcript of the exchange:

Stewart:

‘Cause listen, coal is our oil. That’s the natural resource that we have the most of. I mean, we’ve got to make good use of that, do it in a responsible way. We can’t just give on on that, because coal is good stuff.

Salazar:

Coal is good stuff.

Stewart:

That’s what I’m talking about.

Salazar:

We’ve got to make sure we can use it and burn it cleanly.

Stewart:

What?

Salazar:

We’ve got to make sure we can use it and burn it cleanly.

Stewart:

I like the use it. Burn it cleanly doesn’t sound right to me.

Salazar:

You’ve got to sequester the carbon and put it underground.

Stewart:

And you’ve just recently repealed a rule making it so they can’t dump their waste in the Appalachian streams anymore … Weren’t they doing that?

Salazar:

That’s right. We have to protect our streams. We have to protect our waters.

Stewart:

You act like I’m babbling secrets here. You do something like this, “Oh, you’re going to tell them about the coal in the water. Alright. That’s great.”

Because those people don’t deserve that. They’re good people. They should have some clean streams, and we should use their coal.

OK, well, maybe folks would like to comment on The Daily Show’s bulletin board about this. If so, you can visit it here.
